At Furlong HVAC Services, we specialize in top-quality efficient heating and cooling for your home or business in Gananoque, Lansdowne, Kingston, and surrounding areas, a heat pump is a great option to consider. On this page, we’ll look at the benefits of heat pumps, the difference between regular heat pumps and cold climate heat pumps, and why homeowners should consider choosing a heat pump over a gas furnace.

A heat pump is a combination of equipment that uses the principles of thermodynamics to transfer heat energy between two different temperature zones.
It is similar to an air conditioner unit, but it can also work in reverse to either cool or heat a space. During the summer, a heat pump functions like an air conditioner by removing heat from inside a building and expelling it outside. During the winter, it reverses the process and extracts heat from outside air or the ground and transfers it inside, effectively providing warmth to a building.
Heat pumps are highly efficient and cost-effective as they use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat through combustion.
They are widely used for residential and commercial heating and cooling applications and are popular for their energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly features.
The key difference between a regular heat pump and a cold climate heat pump is their ability to operate efficiently in extremely low temperatures. Regular heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the air outside and transferring it inside, but they struggle to do so in extremely cold temperatures.
On the other hand, cold climate heat pumps use advanced technology to extract heat from even the coldest air, making them ideal for areas with harsh winter weather. These heat pumps feature components such as scroll compressors, larger coils, and better insulation to ensure they’re effective in highly cold temperatures. Additionally, they can come with features like defrost cycles which help remove frost buildup on the compressor.
Cold climate heat pumps offer a cost-efficient, energy-efficient, and low-carbon solution to heat homes and buildings in colder climates.

When our older furnace failed recently Phil sent Curtis to check it out within a couple of hours. A small repair didn't work: it was time to change it. Furlong got us there quickly within days! Highly recommend them and Furlong: great service from great people!Posted on Google![]()

Dear Phil, I cannot thank you enough for finding the fix for our two new boilers. We had been struggling with them since Feb. 2018 and had a number of service calls from other companies and spent a few grand but still had major issues. It was not until Furlong H.V.A.C. came on site and noticed the boilers were plumbed incorrectly. There were a couple smaller adjustments as well but now both boilers are working well and kept us warm during this past long cold winter of 2025-26. Furlong HVAC is simply a top notch company when it comes to heating and A/C . They are family owned and operated and have exceptional service, prompt communication and fair pricing. I had a heating issue shortly after moving into my new home and upon the former owners recommendation, I called them to see how quickly they could take care of it. They responded almost immediately to fix my problem, advised me it was a recall issue and was at not cost. They also followed up with an upgrade to my system. My wife and I could not be there during the repair but they took care of it without us there and I can’t speak enough as to how prompt, clean and trustworthy they are. Highly recommend Furlong HVAC Services.Posted on Google![]()

We had a heat pump installed at our cottage last week by this company. Dealing with them was simply a pleasure. Responses to inquiries were prompt and they coordinated with an electrical company to have everything completed in one day. They even made adjustments to our vinyl siding to make it look like it was made to go there. A follow up call after few days after installation provided some great tips for settings. I would highly recommended dealing with Phil.Posted on Google![]()
